Children and Diarrhoea
If your children are OK, you're OK. That's how it is.
Diarrhoea is very common among babies and toddlers. It can be unsettling for you both, but it usually passes quickly. If it doesn’t, you should seek advice from your GP. IMODIUM® is not recommended for children younger than 12 years of age.
Babies and toddlers
Young children are very susceptible to diarrhoea, so the chances are your child will experience symptoms at some stage. Your baby’s immune system takes some years to build up resistance to infections. While they are young and more vulnerable, it’s likely they will have diarrhoea between 2 to 3 times a year.
Treatment for children
IMODIUM® is not recommended if your child is under 12 years old. Medical studies show that children are more sensitive to dehydration; so oral hydration treatments are recommended if your child is under 12. If their diarrhoea lasts longer than 24 hours you should consult your doctor
Further advice for treating your child’s diarrhoea (if under 12 years):
- Avoid sweetened fluids like soft drinks and energy drinks, sugar water, and undiluted fruit juices. All contain sugar that draws water into the intestine and can make diarrhoea worse.
- Giving your child solid foods; such as breads, cereals, rice, lean meats, yoghurt, fruits and vegetables can help restore essential nutrients needed to fight infection.
- Try yoghurts that contains lactobacillus, or live cultures.
- Keep your child’s bottom dry. Use care, tenderness, and plenty of nappy cream when changing nappies, since it's easy for your baby’s bottom to become irritated.
